Lesson Advice

Pre lesson advice to parents

Going to a swimming lesson for the first time will be a much more enjoyable experience for the child and you if you come well prepared.

Here are some suggestions to think about before you go to the pool.

Swim nappies (see our page on what to wear)
Children who are not potty trained need to wear special swim nappies, not ordinary disposable ones that they normally wear, as these will not hold in any leaks and will become extremely heavy when wet.

The swim nappies can be disposable or reusable, they come in a variety of colours, sizes and designs. Some have Velcro or tie fastenings while others are like pull on pants.

Most of the swim nappies can be worn under swimming costumes. The BSF recommends that swim nappies should be worn under a NEOPRENE NAPPY, like a Happy nappy or Nappicova. Usually this neoprene nappy has no ties, Velcro or elastic. It is made from soft neoprene material with wide bands at the waist and the legs to prevent any leaks. Try the swim nappy on your child before going to the pool to make sure that it fits correctly.

Keeping warm
When the child has had their lesson they will need to feel warm and secure. A towel with a hood has the added advantage of keeping the head as well as the body warm.

Practicalities
Make sure that you know where to park your car and buggies, where to change, put clothes and soiled nappies.
