This is a medical condition and not due to bad parenting. ADHD can be treated with a combination of support, advice and medication. Children are usually diagnosis before the age of 7 and up to 3-5 % of children can have the condition.
Symptoms’ include:
» Short attention span
» Difficulty in concentrating
» Disorganised
» Excessive levels of activity
» Impulsive behaviour
Children with ADHD can excel in competitive sports for example swimming, running and cycling. The sports help them find a structure and a focus, the training programmes can be a useful release for their excess energy.
Michael Phelps the Olympic swimmer had ADHD as a child. He found the swimming pool a safe haven with boundaries.
